Mel Gibson in Armenian Genocide movie?
Posted On 11/27/2007 18:47:39
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? WOULD YOU THINK SUCH A MOVIE WOULD HELP EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT OUR HISTORY? WOULD PEOPLE BE INTERESTED IN SEEING IT... WOULD IT EVEN BE A BLOCKBUSTER HIT OR JUST ANOTHER MOVIE MADE FOR THE ARMENIAN AUDIENCE??

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Foundation for the Struggle Against Baseless Allegations of Genocide (ASIMED) has begun an e-mail campaign to dissuade actor Mel Gibson from playing a role in a film about the Armenian Genocide during World War I.

The president of ASIMED and faculty member at Ataturk University’s history department, Professor Savas Egilmez, said that the Armenian Diaspora had assigned $100 million to Hollywood film production companies to encourage shooting of such a film. “Some Hollywood companies are preparing to shoot a film supporting the Armenian view. There is hearsay that Mel Gibson is to play a role in one of these films. The film is reported to be shot at Icon Productions, the company Gibson is a partner in,” said Egilmez.

Egilmez reminded that a similar situation occurred recently when Sylvester Stallone announced his plans to play a role in a new film adaptation of the book “The Forty Days of Musa Dagh.” “After a campaign led by ASIMED in which more than 3,000 e-mails were sent to Stallone, the actor declined the role. The European press also expressed concerns about the book’s accuracy. We have begun sending documents about the truth of the situation to Gibson. We started an e-mail campaign to urge him to decline the role and to not allow this film to be shot at his production company. What we are facing is a new slander campaign on the level of the Midnight Express. We need to put pressure on this famous actor by telling him the truth of the matter,” Egilmez said, Zaman reports.

Midnight Express is a 1978 film, based on Billy Hayes' book of the same name adapted into screenplay by Oliver Stone. Hayes was a young American student sent to a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey. The film won Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score (Giorgio Moroder) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (Stone). It was also nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (John Hurt), Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture.

Chess legend Garry Kasparov gets 5 days in jail for protest
Posted On 11/26/2007 08:11:33
Garry Kasparov was born Garri Weinstein in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR to an Armenian mother and a Jewish father. He first began the serious study of chess after he came across a chess problem set up by his parents and proposed a solution. His father died when he was seven years old. At the age of twelve, he adopted his mother's Armenian surname, Kasparyan, modifying it to a more Russified version, Kasparov

(CNN) -- A Russian judge sentenced opposition leader Garry Kasparov to five days in jail Sunday, a day after the chess champion-turned-politician and other protesters were arrested at a pro-democracy demonstration in Moscow.

Kasparov was charged and sentenced Sunday for organizing an unsanctioned procession, resisting arrest and chanting anti-government slogans.

The chess grandmaster said his conviction is part of a government effort to harass him.

"Everything you heard here is a lie," he told reporters outside the courtroom. "All my rights were violated from the outset, from the moment of my detention." Watch police hustle Kasparov away at protest »

Kasparov said his arrest was intended to ensure that President Vladimir Putin's party holds on to power. Putin is slated to step down next year at the end of his second consecutive term in office.

Priest arrested for stalking Conan O’Brien
The Rev. David Ajemian could face a year in prison if convicted

NEW YORK - A priest has been arrested on charges of stalking late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien by writing him threatening notes on parish letterhead, contacting his parents and showing up at his studio, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The Rev. David Ajemian, a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, was arrested last week while trying to enter a taping session of NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” at New York’s Rockefeller Plaza, said Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan prosecutor’s office.

Ajemian referred to himself as “your priest stalker” in one note and complained of not being allowed in to see an earlier taping of the O’Brien show, court papers say.

Ara the beautiful and Queen Semiramis
Posted On 11/16/2007 10:15:11
At this time there lived Semiramis (Shamiram in Armenian), the queen of Ninevah. Her husband was Ninus, who came to loathe her for her infidelity, and left his country. Semiramis, who had heard about the fame of the handsome Armenian king Ara, lusted after his image and asked him to come to Ninevah and marry her. When Ara refused, she marched her armies towards Armenia.

The battle began when Semiramis arrived in the region called Ararat. She ordered her commanders to capture Ara alive, but he was vanquished and killed by one of her sons. His body was found on the battlefield among the other slain soldiers. In order to calm the Armenians, who wanted to continue the fight to avenge his death, Semiramis said, "I have prayed to the gods to lick his wounds and heal him. Ara will revive."

Semiramis was a sorceress, and she believed in her powers. She was so crazed at his death and desperate for his beauty that she believed she could revive him. When his corpse decayed she became more crazed than before, and had her servants bury it in a deep grave. Dressing one of the men from her retinue of lovers as Ara, she came before the Armenians and said, "Licking his wounds the gods gave life back to Ara, thus fulfilling our deepest desires. Since they have bestowed on us happiness we should exalt them more than before."

She had a new statue erected to the gods and offered them many sacrifices for saving Ara. The people believed that Ara was revived, and Semiramis was saved from another battle waged against her.

In order to eternalize her love for Ara, she named his son Karthos after him, who was born from his wife Nuvard and aged twelve at the time. Although he was so young, she made him ruler of Armenia.

On her way back to Ninevah, the proud Assyrian queen traveled by the eastern shores of Lake Van. Struck by the beauty of the region and bringing thousands of workers and many architects, she had a magnificent summer palace built on the rocky cliffs nearby. (Ed. Note: There is some discrepancy in Khorenatsi's account of the palace and city alluded to Semiramis. The description of the palace walls and a monumental wall with inscriptions described in his account were actually built during the reigns of the Urartian King Menuas and Argishti. Khorenatsi mistakes the palace and new city of Tushpa for one built by Semiramis. Likewise the Semiramis Canal, which was accredited by Khorenatsi as being built under Semiramis' orders, was laid during the Urartu period, on top of earlier 4th-3rd millennium BC canals).

Khorenatsi goes on to relay that Semiramis remained in the city she had built, appointing as her representative in Assyria and Ninevah, Zoroaster, the religious leader and oracle of the Medes, and as such he ruled the country well for a long time.

Ninus did not die in Ninevah, and is not buried in the palace, as it is said, but actually fled to Crete. When her children grew up they wanted to seize Semiramis' throne and confiscate her treasury. They openly accused her of disgraceful deeds. This enraged her, and she had all of her children killed with the exception of the youngest son Ninyas, or "Zamassias". She left her throne and her treasury to her lovers instead.

Therein Zoroaster tried to usurp the throne, and in the ensuing battle Semiramis was defeated which caused her to flee to Armenia. Her son Ninyas saw his chance, and killing her became the ruler of the kingdom. Ara (Karthos, the renamed son of Ara) also died in during the battle, leaving a son named Anushavan.

Another version of the story of Ara Geghetsik and Semiramis is tied to the mountain that bears Ara's name (Arai Lehr). This version has Ara being cast upon the mountain by Semiramis after he spurns her advances. Semiramis, skilled in black magic, conjured the forces of the night to throw him into the void, and when he landed, his body sank onto the top of the mount, giving it its present contour. Yet another tale says that when Ara died, and Semiramis had him buried at the foot of the mountain, his spirit rose, forming the top of the mountain into his sleeping likeness. The top of the mountain does resemble the contour of a man's face.

Human Cloning
Posted On 11/12/2007 12:24:33
(c) Reuters 2007

OSLO - The world faces a stark choice between banning cloning of humans or preparing ways to protect them from potential abuse or discrimination, a U.N. study said on Sunday.

Experts at the U.N. University's Institute of Advanced Studies said it would only be a matter of time before scientists manage to clone a human if governments do not impose a ban.

"Whichever path the international community chooses it will have to act soon — either to prevent reproductive cloning or to defend the human rights of cloned individuals," said A.H. Zakri, head of the Institute, which is based in Yokohama, Japan.

Human rights? Forget that... let my clone sit here and work while I'm out fishing. Like seriously, pretty soon ants are going to have more rights than us

Hrant Dink’s children abandon Turkey
Posted On 11/07/2007 21:50:02
/PanARMENIAN.Net/

Arat Dink, the son of slain Agos editor Hrant Dink, and his family abandoned Turkey and settled in Brussels, Inge Drost, a Spokesperson for the Federation of Armenian Organizations of the Netherlands, told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. Hrant Dink’s daughter domiciled at Hague last year, she said.

Turkish media says Arat Dink left Turkey because ‘he and his family were in jeopardy’.

In October Arat Dink stood trial under article 301 for re-publishing his father’s interview where he spoke about the Armenian Genocide, what is rated as “insulting Turkishness”.
