Actually, churches back then were hewn directly out of the rock formation. Architects would draw up a plan of what needed to be carved out of the mass of rock and all the king's bitches... errr men would grab their chisels and start carving up a storm to damn near perfection.

I have never been to Armenia before, but the pictures reminded me so much of the churches in the North of Iraq, where they are also hundreds of years old, mostly carved in the mountains.
I tried to find some good pictures, but this is all i could find. See how similar the culture is, i mean the whole idea of carving churches in the mountains, old remains...
